Section P2801.6 of the Residential Code of New York State requires a storage tank water heater installed where leakage would cause damage to sit in a pan at least 1.5 inches deep drained by an indirect waste pipe of at least 3/4 inch, but does not require a pan drain for a replacement heater where none was installed before. Section P2801.7 requires a water heater with an ignition source in a garage to be elevated so the ignition source is at least 18 inches above the floor, unless listed as flammable vapor ignition resistant.
